BACKGROUND
In Kenya, there are insufficient social infrastructures for such things as roads, electricity
and communications and these inconveniences
the lives of the people. Upon developing
these basic infrastructures, spatial information are essential, however as each relevant
organization is individually developing spatial information. It is an inefficient system with
problems such as data exchange not being possible and duplicate data is created.
Therefore, the construction of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI), which aims
at shared use and efficient utilization of spatial information in Kenya, is specified in the
National Development Plan. Survey of Kenya (SOK), the Ministry of Lands is the head office
for undertaking the work.
On the grounds of this situation, the Kenyan government requested government of Japan to carry out a project for the construction of the NSDI.
In response to the request of the Republic of KENYA, the Japan International
Cooperation Agency (JICA), the official agency responsible for the implementation
of technical cooperation programs of the Japanese government has decided to
conduct the project which aims to strengthen the capacity of SOK in order to promote
the application of GIS.
Geographical Survey Institute (GSI) and Kokusai Kogyo Co., Ltd. were commissioned in
September 2006 by JICA to carry the project.
